Steam Engine

A Sulzer steam engine that used to produce power for the Finlayson mill can still be seen in its original location. This giant machine was taken into use in 1900 and remains the biggest steam engine ever used in Finland.

Its output was 1,650 horse power and the flywheel has an impressive diameter of more than 8 metres. The engine was in daily use until 1926 and continued to be used as a backup power source until the mid-1950’s.

At the steam engine museum, you can see the Sulzer steam engine itself, tools and equipment used with the engine as well as other objects relating to power production at the Finlayson mill.
