PhD Candidate Charley Boerman: Remembering Famines and Making Sense of the Present

The cultural afterlives of the Finnish (1866–68), Ukrainian (1932–33) and Greek (1941–44) famines have been marked by local, national and transnational political, economic and social developments. In this presentation, Charley Boerman will trace how the memorialization of these past famines make sense of present-day turmoil, such as war and economic crisis. She will do so through a variety of commemorative events, memorials, film and political speeches.
